State drinking rates ranked top in nation
Nationwide, Wisconsin leads in numerous alcohol related trends. The long term problems associated with this range from depression to decreased academic performance.

Wisconsin has the highest rates of both binge and heavy drinking in the nation, according to a report released by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Population Health Institute.

Eight percent of the adult population engages in heavy drinking, defined as 30 drinks in one month for women and 60 for men, according to the report. Twenty-two percent of the population engages in binge drinking, stated as five or more drinks on one occasion, the report said.

Richard Brown M.D., clinical director of the Wisconsin Initiative to Promote Healthy Lifestyles, said he was not surprised by these rankings.

“Wisconsin is always at the top, or very near the top, of these state surveys,” Brown said.

No one is 100 percent sure why Wisconsin has had such consistently high rates of heavy drinking, according to Brown. He said that ethnic heritage could be at least partially to blame.

“People in Germanic and Scandinavian countries like to drink. [The cause could be] the merging of that with the Wild West ethic in the United States that getting drunk is fun and should be fun,” Brown said.

Whatever the cause, the trend has trickled down to underage citizens. Binge drinking rose 28 percent among 12-20-year-olds in Wisconsin, the report said.

Brown said the physical effects of binge drinking are commonly thought to be harmful, but said he is equally worried about other long term problems.

“There are psychosocial problems that tend to occur more in young people who engage in risky drinking,” Brown said. “[Problems such as] depression, academic failure and stress in relationships cause lots of problems in young people’s lives.”

Brown said the university is not doing enough to make sure students’ futures are not being negatively impacted by the Wisconsin drinking culture.

“There are several ways that the state, the city and the university could be doing more,” Brown said.

The current proposal to decrease the number of alcohol vendors in downtown Madison could be one way to curb heavy drinking, according to Brown.

UW-Madison sophomore David Abbott, 20, said he does not think Wisconsin has a drinking problem. He said the amount of drinking in Madison is similar to that of the Twin Cities, where he is from.

Abbott also said he does not think the concentrated amount of drinking on campus affects students’ academic performance.

“Overall, the attitude here is work hard, play hard,” Abbott said.

I have always maintained that Wisconsin and/or Florida has the craziest, weirdest people. I think it's the cold weather or their practice of worshipping badgers.

I have never heard of a "fast noodle" joint. Who says no one likes noodle teats? In California they concentrate more on human teats.

Did you girls' get your prostates checked while at Celebrate the Prostate?

We record on Sunday as well. I find that it is a good laid back day to podcast.

Dragon Wars is not plot driven so much as it is crap driven.

Susan Sarandon must have been blackmailed into filming Mr. Woodcock.

3:10 to Yuma was awesome. Russell Crowe is so evil yet charismatic, he and Christian Bale are brilliant in this movie. But keep in mind I reallllllly love Westerns.

You're right Angie. On TV it is about Jessica Alba in her underwear and in the movie theater trailer it gives you the whole plot.

Eastern Promises sounds really good. You can't beat the Russian mob. Yes, Kim, he is supposedly in a fight with two guys while he is naked. A little full frontal for you. The director is David Cronenberg and he and Viggo's last movie together was A History of Violence another great movie.

In the Valley of Elah sounds like the laugh out loud comedy of the Fall.

So this dude invites Angie over to watch a DVD and then makes here bring the DVD? I hate Top Gun, it just never did anything for me. Angie it sounds like you were at a d-bag convention. Although, I bet it does look good in HD.

You are preaching to the choir, Angie. I love Supernatural and I am a boy. I love Dean's car, love the music, love the creatures, love the whole package. I wonder how they are going to stop the thing that is supposed to happen to Dean at the end of this season? Sorry that sounds clumsy, but I didn't want to spoil anything.

Now you listen here Laura, Nikki is a gentle, pure little angel and she wouldn't interpret a song as sexual unless it was pretty much pornographic. Was it one of them 2 Live Crew songs? Isn't A Walk to Remember the story of 2 Live Crew?

It's good to hear Kim is so humble when it comes to talking about her singing.

If I didn't feel like it would hurt my rep, I would tell you that your singing was pretty f'n good. I don't know about gifts from God...

Ooooh, you mean "busy."

This whole music and downloading thing really burns my biscuits. I would want as many people as I could get to hear or see my music and videos. And the majority of the people who are pissed about this are the ones who have all the money in the world already. Record companies, Prince, Metallica, you think Joe Blow and the Regular Dudes wouldn't like people to watch their videos and hear their music anyway they can? F all you all!

Sorry.

Well, I have always heard that a good knifing or two will keep you young.

Good eye, Angie, O.J. could be the next Dr. Jack Kervorkian. If you are ready to leave this world and you need some help or are afraid to do it yourself, come stay in O.J.'s suite for a weekend in Vegas. After you have your fill of the Vegas nightlife, O.J. will slit your throat and send you gurgling into the sweet peacefulness of the afterlife. If you act now, O.J. will also throw in a ticket for a lavish Las Vegas show.

In this day and age it's 2 Hail Marys and 4 Our Fathers for naked cellphone pictures.

If I were to guess, she was on some sort of painkiller, perhaps vicodin, and she probably had a little alchohol mixed in. That is a recipe for a little cocktail I like to call The Trainwreck.

I actually like the different party rooms. Because of those party rooms, that was the most music MTV has played in 5 years.

Speaking of lip syncing, did you all think that Rhianna and Fall Out Boy were lip syncing Shut Up and Drive?

What is going on in Wisconsin? You telling me that you can just come across a couple of uncircumsized peni in the wild?

I think the bigger question is Supernatural or doggie?

Just close your eyes and pray it ends soon, huh?

Nikki, Zach is the one whose mind is a samurai sword.

NBC cancelled Freaks and Geeks (f 'em) and Fox cancelled Undeclared (f 'em).

Kim, you are a fellow NYPD Blue fan, did you watch K-Ville on Fox this past week? Wasn't this supposed to be brought to us from the creators or something of NYPD Blue? And if you did watch it, did you like it? I liked it alright and will continue to give it a chance, but I think some work needs to be done. It is kind of Prison Breaky, there are giant holes in the story, but I am willing to overlook them for a little while.

Great show.

TJ. i just wanted to say that it's kind of embarrassing that you're main reference point for Tommy Lee Jones is Batman Forever. you know?

Piccu said...

Chappy, I was thinking the exact same thing. Can we get a little Coal Miner's Daughter or some Under Seige or The Fugitive?

Kim said...

I did not watch K-Ville, although I was somewhat intrigued by Cole Hauser. I enjoyed him in Good Will Hunting. Because you are a fellow lover of NYPD Blue and for this reason I trust your judgement...if you think it is worth my time, I will check it out.

Nikki,

Finally just finished the episode. Yes doggiestyle is totally the best. Why would i want to look at your face?! I'm also a fan of lifting up against the wall.

Also, as far as I know circumcision is just as prevalent in Canada as it is in the States. Back when I was born and for quite a few years the medical consensus was that it was a health issue. That it was safer to circumcise than not to, but nowadays thats been generally accepted as a misnomer. Uncircumcised guys just need to clean themselves better or something, I wouldn't know myself.
